Info and official rules

What makes a grip
count.

What Grip League is

  • Grip League is a sport. One measurement: how hard you can squeeze, in kilograms.
  • It is the competition platform of the Grip Strength Sport Association of South Africa, which writes the technical standard.
  • Attempts happen at official league rounds only, on the league's own calibrated gripper, in front of an official.
  • The ranking is international — anyone, anywhere in the world can be on it. Right now every official round is held in South Africa.
  • Your best counted squeeze puts you on the board. South African national records are issued in four divisions.

How it works

  1. 1

    Register

Sign up and create your fighter profile — name, sport, division.

  2. 2

    Enter an event

Book your place on one of the official league rounds on the events page.

  3. 3

    Buy tokens

One token is one attempt. Buy them in the app, or redeem a promo code.

  4. 4

    Take the gripper

On the floor the official zeroes the official Grip League gripper and hands it to you.

  5. 5

    Say your name and squeeze

She tells you when to start. You say your name, then deliver one full squeeze.

  6. 6

    Show the number

Keep holding the gripper and show the official the reading for five seconds. That figure is your score.

The rules

  1. 1

    Stand up straight

On your feet, upright, still, facing the official. You may lean slightly into the side you are squeezing. No swinging, no rocking, no stepping, no dipping the shoulder to drive the arm.

  2. 2

    Free hand touches nothing

Your free arm hangs at your side and stays off everything — the gripper, the gripping arm, your own thigh, hip or chest, and any wall, table or bar. Gripping your other thigh as a brace voids the attempt.

  3. 3

Arm between the floor and 45 degrees

The gripping arm points straight down at the floor, or anywhere up to 45 degrees from the floor. Never out at shoulder height, never at eye level, never overhead. Pick one position before you squeeze and hold it there.

  4. 4

    No inertia

No swinging the arm up into the squeeze, no shaking, no pumping, no driving it down into your leg. The number must come from your hand, not from momentum.

  5. 5

    One squeeze

One full squeeze, like a trigger — you pull it once. No partial squeezes, no second pull, no best of three.

  6. 6

    Hold it for the reading

Ease off the pressure but stay holding the gripper in position. The official lifts your wrist and holds the display to camera for five seconds so the reading can be confirmed.

  7. 7

    60 seconds

From the moment the gripper is handed to you, you have 60 seconds to complete your attempt.

  8. 8

    League gripper only

Every score is set on the league's own Camry EH101 digital hand dynamometer, zeroed and handed to you by the official. Your own gripper is never valid.

What gets it thrown out

  • A partial squeeze, or a second squeeze on the same token
  • The free hand touching the gripper, the gripping arm, your own thigh or hip, or anything else
  • The gripper pressed into your leg, hip, chest, a table or a wall
  • Swinging the arm into the squeeze, shaking or pumping for extra kilograms
  • The arm raised above 45 degrees from the floor, or held out at shoulder or eye level
  • Moving your feet or rocking your body
  • Letting go of the gripper before the official has read the display
  • A gripper that is not the league's own device

How it is judged

  • One — the AI official

The app's AI official watches the footage. It reads the kilogram figure straight off the display and checks the squeeze against every rule above. Nobody types a score in.

  • Two — the official on the floor

The certified official standing next to you gives the attempt a green flag or a red flag on the spot. Every flag is tied to their account.

  • Three — the senior official

Anything eligible for a South African record, plus random attempts pulled anywhere on the board, goes to a separate offline review by a senior official before it stands.

The device

Every score in the league is set on the same Camry EH101 digital hand dynamometer, peak-hold, zeroed on camera before every squeeze. League-issued and serialised. Personal or spring grippers are never valid.

Governance and records

Grip League is the competition platform of the Grip Strength Sport Association of South Africa. The Association writes the technical standard, the League runs the rounds, publishes the board and issues South African records.

Men up to 83.0 kg and above 83.0 kg. Women up to 70.0 kg and above 70.0 kg. These are the international split lines. The live board ignores bodyweight — divisions exist for national records only.

The live board ignores bodyweight — one board, everybody on it. Every month has its own top ten, and there are prizes on the line.
